Jackie Baillie, MSP for Dumbarton, has today joined calls to give free travel on public transport to all NHS staff. The Scottish Labour Party has formally asked Michael Matheson – Cabinet Secretary for Transport – to introduce free public transport for NHS and social care staff for the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jackie Baillie notes that non-essential travel on public transport should be avoided but providing NHS staff the option of free travel during this difficult time is the least the Scottish Government can do by way of supporting these key workers.
Jackie Baillie said:
“Removing the additional stress of increased travel expenses due to an increased number of shifts for NHS health and social care workers is the least we can do for them.
“These key workers are carrying out vital work to ensure that the health of individuals and families across Scotland is protected. It is the Government’s responsibility to ensure that these staff face as few barriers as possible in order for them to most effectively carry out this life-saving work. Offering free public transport travel would help to achieve that.”
