Jackie Baillie, MSP for Helensburgh and Lomond, has called on the new, unnamed retailer who has bought the Waitrose site in Helensburgh to open as soon as possible to allow local residents to have access to necessary food supplies.
This is following an understanding that the original plan was for the new retailer to open near to Christmas 2020, despite Waitrose closing its doors in May. Despite requesting details of the new retailer, Waitrose is unable to provide information of the new retailer to Jackie Baillie, citing a legal agreement which prevents them from doing so.
Jackie Baillie said:
“I have been in discussion with Waitrose who have advised that they have no choice other than to close their doors in May because the business has been sold on to another retailer.
“Information given to me suggests that the new retailer had originally planned to delay opening until Christmas. I am sure that Waitrose, as well as the new, unnamed retailer, would agree with me that these are extraordinary times.
“I urge the new retailer to open immediately given the importance of having a large food retailer in the area and the impact that coronavirus is having on our everyday lives.”
