ROBOTIC-ASSISTED SURGERY
ROBOTIC-ASSISTED SURGERY

Jackie Baillie has tested out a robotic system which aims to increase hospital capacity and assist surgeons in carrying out less invasive procedures.

The da Vinci Xi surgical systems supplied by Intuitive, were recently brought to the Scottish Parliament for members to find our more first-hand.

The systems are in use in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as well as at the Golden Jubilee to carry out robotic-assisted surgery.

Procedures are ‘minimally invasive’ due to the technology providing surgeons with enhanced visualisation, dexterity and precision. It can be used across a range of surgical specialities including urology, gynaecology, colorectal, thoracic, and abdominal or general surgery.

Studies already carried out suggest that robotic-assisted surgery offers benefits to patients including less blood loss, fewer complications, less time in hospital and less chance of readmission.

Dumbarton constituency MSP, Jackie Baillie, said: “Innovation must be at the heart of our NHS and I am pleased that this technology is in use locally.

“They are an important part of our healthcare service working more efficiently, speeding up recovery time because the operation is less invasive. That means patients do not need to be in hospital beds for more time than necessary.

“With one in eight Scots languishing on waiting lists, it is imperative that the Scottish Government continues to invest and look for more efficient ways of operating in order to meet the needs of our patients.”
