Jackie Baillie, MSP for Dumbarton, has welcomed a social care support fund for carers, experiencing loss of income due to coronavirus, which has successfully passed into emergency legislation by the Scottish Parliament.
The fund began as a proposal formulated by the GMB Trade Union and Scottish Labour following opposition to such a fund from Scottish Government ministers. The fund will be available to social care staff who have lost income because they are off sick, self-isolating or cannot work their usual shifts due to coronavirus.
Jackie Baillie has consistently called for more support to be given to social care sector staff who have been affected by Covid-19.
Jackie Baillie MSP said:
“I am delighted that social care staff will now receive the financial support that they desperately need. It was completely unacceptable that previously these key workers were being offered no more than statutory sick pay when they had to be off sick after fighting on the frontline.
“We now need to see support for social care staff who are still working. This means immediate access to local testing facilities and the proper PPE needed to protect themselves and others.
“My thanks goes to the brave men and women in our social care sector who are fighting day in day out to keep the most vulnerable in our community safe.”
