Jackie Baillie MSP calls for a boost in resources for the NHS as new figures show vacancies for nurses and consultants are at their worst level since the SNP came to power.

The new statistics from ISD Scotland show that in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, there are more than 1,000 vacant nursing and midwifery posts and more than 100 vacant medical and dental consultancy posts as of June 30 2019. The vacancy rates in both of these areas equates to 7.3 per cent.

The vacancy rate for nursing and midwifery posts in Greater Glasgow and Clyde is higher than the Scottish average.

The figures come just days after Audit Scotland reported on the crisis within the GP workforce and concluded that the SNP government has not estimated the impact of workforce pressures on primary care services.

Jackie said:

“These figures are nothing short of dreadful and make it clearer than ever that our NHS is in crisis. Our hardworking NHS staff are already overworked, but vacant posts make their job even harder.

“It is clear that this SNP government has under resourced our health service, and it is staff and patients who are paying the price. Despite warm words from the SNP, little has improved.

“This government must properly resource our health service, and ensure patients get the treatment they need.”
