Dumbarton constituency MSP, Jackie Baillie, has urged NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to urgently address the problems with the Vale of Leven Hospital’s Out of Hours Service.

The health board’s most recent performance report shows that between April and June 2019, Out of Hours services across Greater Glasgow and Clyde were closed 76 times. Figures revealed to the MSP showed that the Vale of Leven’s Out of Hours service was closed 35 times between the 4 April and the 4 June, meaning closures at the Vale of Leven accounted for at least half of the closures across the whole board area.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has constituently failed to ensure staffing levels at the Out of Hours service are sufficient to keep it open.

Jackie said:

“These figures are truly eye opening. For years I have been highlighting the problems at the Vale of Leven hospital, and the health board tell us time and time again that they do not favour Glasgow hospitals, but these figures tell a very different story.

“The Vale of Leven hospital accounts for half of all the closures of Out of Hours services in Greater Glasgow and Clyde between April and June.

“The health board promised us in June that this service would be carefully considered to ensure that it is sustainable going forward. I now await the outcome of their August work shop and hope that the next set of figures will show a decrease in the number of closures at the Vale of Leven hospital.”
