Commenting on the news that Shell is to cut 475 jobs, Scottish Labour’s Economy, Fair Work and Jobs spokesperson Jackie Baillie said:

“This is bad news for oil and gas workers, and will have a severe impact on the wider North East economy. Everything that can be done by government must be done to support those who lose their job. Today’s news highlights the need for greater investment in the skills of our people, so that people out of work can compete for the jobs of the future.

“The UK and Scottish Governments must now support the calls from offshore trade unions for an urgent summit to find ways to support those who work in the oil and gas industry during this difficult time.

“Labour has set out a plan for direct government investment in North Sea infrastructure, to see the industry through this downturn. The action taken so far by government just hasn’t been enough, and people deserve mo
