This was my reaction to the sad news this week for workers at Polaroid.

Commenting on the announcement that Safilo Group intends to transfer its operations at the Polaroid production site in Vale of Leven Industrial Estate from Scotland to China, Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie said:

“This is a very stressful and uncertain time for the workforce at Polaroid and my thoughts are with everyone whose jobs are affected by the announcement. The owners of the company have said that they intend to wind down production over the next twelve months so we should do everything possible to try and secure continuing employment at the site. I have already had initial conversations with local directors at Polaroid and with Scottish Government Ministers and I will be meeting staff and managers at Polaroid next week to discuss what can be done to protect these jobs.

“While we should not give up hope just yet, it is still important that work starts on supporting the workforce to help them find new jobs and training opportunities in the event of closure. West Dunbartonshire Council’s employment and skills services will be working closely with the Scottish Government’s PACE team to ensure that the workers at Polaroid get all the support they need and I will continue to liaise with the company and workforce to help in whatever way I can
